General Meeting
LAKE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY
President’s Message
Our last General Meeting in Middletown was a sheer delight. While rain poured and wind howled we listened in rapt attention to our speaker, Scott Allen, as he spoke about “Lillie Langtry and Guenoc”. We all learned things we never knew about Lillie, our most famous citizen: For example she personally made wine here and sold it in San Francisco .
We elected Gabby Reinhart to the newly-created position of Assistant Treasurer. Gabby has done great work as our new Membership Chairman; she has already simplified our membership application so that any of us can follow its directions when recruiting new members.
The Ely Stage Station progresses. The county brought in base rock for the road and Eric Seely will have a grader out next week. He will move the house on to its foundation between storms. Under Greg Dills the barn project is on hold till Spring when it is less difficult to get equipment into the barns.
Our website, under the management of Mireya Turner is a work in progress. Our address is www.lakecountyhistory.org Check out the marvelous work of George Stimson and Sandy Collins on www.lakecountyhistory.org/photo-location-project-page/ (Past and Present). I have requested George to take the job of volunteer webmaster. He is considering taking the job.
Due to our growth, we need to create a new position of Librarian? Antiquarian? Storekeeper? We have accumulated thousands of artifacts, photographs, writings and other THINGS, including barns, which are farmed out in various locations. We have no system to formally accept them, account for them, and keep track of where they are. Under Greg Dills ’ leadership, even the barns are being collected and moved to Ely. John Reinhart has rounded up a computerized inventory program to accomplish what we need but we need volunteers to assist in inventorying what we have.
Under Mike Weeden the Nice Clubhouse is taking shape. We had our last Board meeting there. Furthermore, we plan to hold general meetings and fundraisers there. We need many more folding chairs and tables. If you know of any we can get please call Mike Weeden at 350 4843 or me at 279 4062.
We have agreed to set up a booth for Earth Day at the Calpine Center in Middletown on April 19. Also we will provide a speaker to talk on geysers.
Please mark your calendar and join us at our next General Membership Meeting on April 27, place and speaker to be announced. Stay tuned.
